Splish Splash Reading Bash

The summer reading program came to a close at the Belgrade Library today. To celebrate all of the hard work that everyone has done we had a Splish Splash Reading Bash. This super awesome party started off with a play-- The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark. Luckily for those little fish the shark went home without any dinner! Then it was time for several fun activities! Children got to make a "fish food" trail mix, create a whale, decorate a bookmark, toss some fish back into the "ocean," and get their faces painted! We hope that all of these aspiring young readers will continue to visit the library! We'll see you all next summer for some more fun with a new summer reading program!! :)

Math Wiz Comes to an End

This was the final week of the Math Wiz-- to celebrate the Club had a pizza party. Club members played some Math Wiz, ate pizza, and received award certificates detailing their individual Math Wiz game statistics. During the five week program a total of 46 children participated in Math Wiz. The total points that the club earned amounted to a whopping 41,085. The kids solved a total of 944 puzzles! That means that the average number of points per a puzzle was 43.5! The club did extremely well! Each of the members should be proud!

Officer Phil & the Belgrade Library

A police car had its sirens blaring outside the library today! Luckily it wasn't due to the presence of any 'bad guys!' Rather, Officer Phil was demonstrating some of the cool features of his police car to the kids who had come to this weeks Our Community Reads story time! The children listened to a reading of the story Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathman and There's a Wocket in My Pocket by Dr. Seuss (one of Officer Phil's favorite books to read to his daughter). Next Officer Phil shared a bit about what being a police officer is like with the kids. Then it was time to take a look at the police car! The children got to sit in the car and see several of the gadgets that make it different from the ordinary car! They even got to turn on the siren and lights! What a treat!

Can Your Dinosaur Walk on Water?

The Belgrade Library was brimming with ideas today, as young inventors worked tirelessly to invent a way for dinosaurs to walk on water! For 'Fun at 1:00' the Museum of the Rockies arrived with several tools and some information about Leonardo da Vinci. They explained that, among his numerous talents, Leonardo da Vinci was an inventor. His ideas included hang gliders, tanks, musical instruments, boats, bridges, and many more things-- one of which was a method for soldiers to walk on water! Was it possible that the kids could create a way for dinosaurs to walk on water?? After the children were given several tools, a toy dinosaur, and a sketch sheet they got to work perfecting devices to aid their dino pals in the quest to walk on water! Once a device was completed it was off to the pool to test it, then back to work to perfect it! Eventually all of our dinosaur friends had a device that either aided them to walk on water or to float comfortably along!

Fishy Findings!

Today Gary Sanger from FWP (Fish Wildlife and Parks) brought along some of his aquatic friends to meet the kids. He showed tiny bugs that start in the water and grow to little flies that buzz around. The kids got to play with tadpoles and even got to react with a real Gardner Snake! The kids then used their watery friends as inspiration to create fish of their very own!

A Howlin' Good Time!

The visitors for the Our Community Reads program today were R.E.A.D. Dogs! The furry friends who came to the library to help with storytime are all certified Reading Education Assistance Dogs (aka R.E.A.D.). They adore having children read stories to them! The kids loved reading to the dogs! Our visitors were black lab Selah (with her owner Wendy), anatolian shephard Loki (with his owner Heide), and golden retriever Zamba (with her owner Val). Each dog was unique, but they had one thing in common-- a love of reading! We also discovered that not only do these dogs like to read-- they enjoy singing, too! Selah even joined in! After the opening song Val (with the help of Zamba) read Ten Little Puppies by Marian Harris. Then it was the children's turn to share some stories with the dogs! What a fun way to practice reading!

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

It was fair winds for the Fun at 1:00 program today! After hearing Patricia read Harry on the Rocks the group was split up into six different teams for a scavenger hunt! The search was on! Children hunted for a purple egg, a fish, a bobber, a star, a blue moon, a ball, a bear, a rubber duck, a paper butterfly, and a shell! In no time at all each team had returned with all of the items! Now it was time to make a boat! The kids created some of the best sailboats, pirate ships, and motorboats that the world has ever seen! Finally it was time to see if their products would float and how many objects the boats could hold before sinking!

Journalist Reads!

Today for Our Community Reads we had a journalist visiting us! Dennis Gaub worked as a journalist for many years-- his first experience with writing for a paper was in fifth grade, when his teacher let him and some others put together a school newspaper! From the sounds of it, journalists get to meet a lot of interesting people and have many of intriguing experiences! Dennis told us about riding in one of the Blue Angels (the Navy's Flight Demonstration Team that performs flight aerobatics) at over 700 miles an hour! Very exciting indeed! The children got a special treat as Dennis read not one, but two stories! First was A Crazy Day at the Critter Cafe by Barbara Odanaka and the second was The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by John Scieszska. We were very lucky to have such a wonderful visitor!

A Trip to Volcano Island!

For many it was just a regular day at the Belgrade Community Library on Wednesday, but not for those participating in the Fun at 1:00 program! Those lucky kids & parents took a trip to Volcano Island with Montana Kid's Yoga! The trip included a motorcycle ride, earthquakes, shipwrecks, mermaids, sea creatures, and (of course) a volcano eruption! After the journey (taken with some kid's yoga poses & a bit of imagination) was over the children made puppets and helped to decorate the ocean that had appeared on the back wall of the Community Room! What a fun way to spend the afternoon!

Storytime on Fire!

There was a firetruck parked in front of the library this Friday! Luckily it wasn't because there was a fire--it was just Fireman Rich paying us a special visit as part of the Our Community Reads program! After telling everyone a bit about himself, Fireman Rich shared Richard Scary's The Busiest Firefighters Ever. The group then took a trip outside to take a look at the fire engine. Once inside fire safety was discussed & the children got their own badges!

MOSS at the Library

The gorgeous weather today was perfect for a visit from Montana Outdoor Science School (MOSS) for the 'Fun at 1:00' program! The focus of the lesson was that of water. Kids (& parents) learned about the different forms of water, then set off to explore the different stations. At one station a water cycle game provided fun & some bracelets, while another station experimented with the different properties of water, and yet another station allowed young scientists to observe some water life!

Math Wiz Starts!

Today Math Wiz met for the first time! The kids got themselves acquainted with the card game, then took the rest of the time to practice formulating equations. It looks as though it will be an enjoyable and educational program!

A Dog in the Library?

We had two visitors from Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter for Our Community Reads story time-- Kari and her friend Peanut, an eleven year old Cocker Spaniel! After reading the book Buddy Unchained (Sit! Stay! Read!) by Daisy Bix to the kids, Kari presented some helpful hints about how to safely approach a dog and what to do if an unleashed dog approaches you. The children demonstrated what they had just learned afterward as Peanut got some attention when several members of the audience politely asked Kari, "May I pet your dog?"

A Magical Start to the Summer!

The summer program got a magical start this Wednesday with a visit from magician Steve Aldrich. The room was packed with parents and children as people crowded in to see the show. Our enthusiastic magician put on a show involving several fun tricks-- a few of them even involved water! After the show children got ready to 'make a splash' with their summer reading as they picked up reading logs and checked out books!

Math Wiz
On Tuesdays at 1:00, from 6/22 - 7/27, students can participate in Math Wiz. Math Wiz is open to students in grades 2 -12. This club plays a math card game that shows students just how fun math can be while increasing their math skills. The club is co-sponsored by Jeremy Razor of Razor Sharp Enterprises. Pre-registration is required. Please call the library at 388-4346.

Make a Splash Summer Reading Program
On Wednesdays at 1:00, from 6/16 - 7/28, students can participate in our Summer Reading Program, Make a Splash. This program is open to students in grades K - 4. Each week we will have a program and activities for the students. Students can pick up their readings logs at the library at any time. Pre-registration is not required. Please attend as many weeks as you would like.

Biz Kids
On Thursdays at 1:00, from 6/17 - 7/15, students can participate in Biz Kids. Biz Kids is open to students in grades 4 - 8. They will learn how to make and manage money in this fast-paced, hands-on program. Pre-registration is required. Please call the library at 388-4346.

Our Community Reads
On Fridays at 11:05, from 6/18 - 7/29, families are invited to join in Our Community Reads. Community Leaders tell about their work and read a story. Some will give a tour of their workplace. Pre-registration is not required. Please attend as many weeks as you would like.

Evening Program Tours the Bank

At the final program of Our Community Reads, Joe Dahinden, president of Valley Bank, took us on an after-hours tour of the bank, showing the vault, the computers, and explaining how the bank keeps money safe. After touring the bank we returned to the library to hear Joe read the book Elephants can paint, too! We learned that elephants eat three hundred pounds of food a day and they spray water out of their trunks. Even so, they are a lot like people. They like to eat cookies and hang out with their friends. They even like to paint pictures!

Winefest 2009

On Friday, September 25th at 6:30 p.m. the Library Foundation will host the 6th annual Winefest Fundraiser. Once again it will be at the River Rock Community Center. The theme this year is "Wines of the World" and promises a wide variety of delicious wine tasting options. We'll have live music by Dos Mayos, door prizes, live auction, silent auction and more. It is the perfect set up for a very exciting evening.

The foundation board members, along with over a dozen volunteers, have been working tirelessly to make this event a success. Come by and visit our booth at Fall Festival to find out more and to purchase your ticket. After August 1, tickets will also be available at the Library and Belgrade Liquor.

The New York Public Library has the lions. We have the dogs. In fact, we will soon be visited by more dogs: dogs that READ. This Thursday (July 23) the Belgrade Library will host four Reading Education Assistance Dogs. READ dogs are trained therapy dogs who work with budding readers to help improve literacy skills. The dogs do this by being very good listeners. Visit Intermountain Therapy Animals to learn more about these amazing animals and be sure to join us Thursday at 6 PM to meet the READ dogs in person.

Judge Snowberger, guest reader at Our Family Reads

Judge Snowberger was the guest reader at Our Community Reads on Thursday evening, July 16th. After telling about the library she enjoyed as a child, and reading two of her favorite stories to the children and grownups, she invited everyone to her work place. At City Hall, she introduced children to the policemen then took them to the courtroom and showed them what a judge does. Daniel and Birch were commended for their good citizenship.

Perusha the cat came to visit us for Wednesday's Fun at 1:00 summer program. She brought her friend, Angela Sandoval, to talk about her home, the Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter. Perusha was very patient as all the kids petted her, and she listened eagerly to the story that Angela read. Then the kids made cat and dog puppets, to entertain Perusha and themselves.

We read A Splendid Friend, Indeed by Suzanne Bloom, Hondo and Fabian by Peter McCarty, George and Martha by James Marshall, and Annie Bananie by Leah Komaiko. Summer Reading Program Takes Flight

Wednesday's Fun at 1:00 program welcomed the Montana Raptor Conservation Center (MRCC). Becky and Shaun, our visitors from MRCC taught the participants about the types of raptors that are found in Montana. The highlights of the afternoon were the two live raptors that are ambassadors of the program. Bu (pronounced Boo), a great horned owl, and Pilgrim, a turkey vulture, made guest appearances. Both birds are unable to survive on their own in the wild; instead, they travel around to help spread the word about how to identify and help raptors. Math Wiz Club

Belgrade students have had an opportunity to stretch their math skills at the library during the past few weeks. The Math Wiz Club has been meeting in the library community room on Tuesday afternoons to play the Math Wiz card game. The club encourages students to use their math savvy, learn new skills, make friends, and have fun. The club is open to students in grades k-12 and meets at 3:00 on Tuesdays through the end of July. Mardella Brock Displays Pottery @ the Library

Stop by the Belgrade Community Library to see the fanciful ceramics by Bozeman artist, Mardella Brock, whose wares are in the display case during July and August. She has been working in ceramics for more than thirty years, a hobby turned occupation. Although her work is mostly functional items such as bowls and dinnerware, most of the items she has chosen for the summer display at the library are more whimsical.

Red, White, and Blue Story Time

Our most recent Story Time was a celebration of the Fourth of July. To start the celebration we read festive books including Meet our Flag, Old Glory by April Jones Prince and Olivia Forms a Band by Ian Falconer. We also read Yankee Doodle by Patti Goodnow and sang the tune.

Of course, no Independence Day celebration is complete without a parade and fireworks. We made red, white, and blue streamers and marched around the library to the music of John Philip Sousa before settling down for a "virtual" fireworks show.

There will not be a Story Time this week (sorry!) because of the holiday, but please join us again on Friday, July 10 for more books and more fun.

Our Chamber of Commerce Director Reads

Debe Youngberg, Director of the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce, read a story at the family story time called Our Community Reads at the library on Thursday. Besides reading, she told children about her childhood experiences at the library. Some of her favorite books were ones that are still popular today: Curious George, Little House On the Prairie, and The Boxcar Children.

The next event in the Our Community Reads series will be on Thursday, July 9, at 6:00, featuring the guest reader, the editor of the Belgrade News, Andy Malby .

Fun at 1:00 Music Rocks

We had lots of rockin' fun at today's summer program with retired teacher JoAnne Ellison, who led us in reading and singing old favorites. Using recycled materials, the kids created their own maracas to add rhythm to "B-I-N-G-O," and "This Land is Your Land." Watch a brief glimpse of the excitement in the clip below.

We will not meet next Wednesday in celebration of the July 4th holiday. On July 8th, our guest presenter is the Montana Raptor Conservation Center with their live animals and fascinating stories.

Belgrade Adult Book Club

The Friday story time theme was "at the beach". Ms. Angela and Mr. Jason read Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach by Melanie Watt, On the Way to the Beach by Henry Cole, Just Grandma and Me by Mercer Mayer, and Beach Riddles by Jennie Spray Doering. We sang songs and had a "whale" of a time. Join us next week for our red, white, and blue theme to celebrate an early Fourth of July weekend (we will not have story time the on 7/3).

Dancing Takes Center Stage in Summer Program

Tanya's Dance Co. put on a spectacular show for our second Be Creative day. Dancers performed a variety of dances from lyrical to hip-hop that delighted all viewers. The library rocked with leaps, bounds, twirls, and handstands. After the performances Tanya herself taught our Be Creative participants a fun step. You can see a clip from the lesson below. Our Community Reads with Fireman Rich Whitaker

Belgrade Fire Department fireman Rich Whitaker was kind enough to stop by to read and discuss books as part of the Our Community Reads program. Fireman Rich read "Dot the Fire Dog" by Lisa Desimini, and talked about his favorite books growing up and the importance of fire safety. He also gave a tour of his fire engine and allowed the children to climb aboard and explore the inside. Thank you Fireman Rich for taking the time to visit!

Home Run Story Time

Touch 'em all! Friday Story time was all about baseball. We read "Casey at the Bat" by Ernest Lawrence Thayer and illustrated by Christopher Bing, "Roasted Peanuts" by Tim Egan, "The Berenstain Bears Go Out for the Team" by Stan and Jan Berenstain, and "The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog" by Mo Willems. Of course, no baseball game is complete without singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" which we sang with gusto. Wear your flip-flops and join us again next Friday (Ms. Angela will be back!) for a summer-themed story time.

Summer Reading Program Begins Yo Ho!

Pirates and parents gathered at the library today to kick off the Summer Reading Program. With help from Education Specialist Angie Hewitt of the Museum of the Rockies, children participated in a treasure hunt, made pirate hats, talked about the dangers of scurvy (not really), and read "Roger, the Jolly Pirate" by Brett Helquist. A good time was had by all. If you missed our kick-off event, don't despair! You can pick up a reading log at any time and join the fun. And be sure to join us next Wednesday at 1 PM for Tanya's Dance Company.

Ms. Evangelina, who teaches a local Spanish immersion program for children, was our guest for a special story time this Friday. Ms. Evangelina was kind enough to read us "El Cumpleanos de Nemo" - a Spanish language counting book about the Disney/Pixar character Nemo. We also read "No David" by David Shannon in both English and Spanish. For more Spanish language titles, please check our Spanish/bilingual book section in the Children's area. Story time this Friday was for the dogs! That's right - our story time books were all about our favorite canine companions. We read "The Great Gracie Chase: Stop that Dog!" by Cynthia Rylant and illustrated by Mark Teague. Then we sang and read "Oh Where, Oh Where Has my Little Dog Gone?" by Iza Trapani. Thank you to everyone who came. See you next week.

Friday Story Time

Miss Suzie has the summer off so Miss Angela and Mr. Jason are holding down the fort until she returns. We read “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault and “Click, Clack, Quackity-Quack” by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin. We also sang a song from “ABC Nursery Rhymes” by Kim Mitzo and Karen Mitzo Hilderbrand. All three titles can be found in our library using the online card catalog. Be sure to visit each Friday at 11:05 for more story fun.
